27th June 2009 - The Moroto peace race organised by the Tegla Loroupe foundation
The moroto peace race was organised by the Tegla Loroupe foundation as
the lead organisation, with other organisations, among them SOPA
international participating. this was an event like no other since this
was the forst time Sudanese warriors, courtesy of SOPA, attended and
participated in the race. All the youth warriors and ladies from the three
countries invited for the race, assembled at the Moroto Municipal football
pitch on 27th June 2009, where they were addressed and flagged off by the
Uganda’s First Lady with the presence of the Great long distance Marathon
Tegla Lorupe. For the ten kilometer race, where our best three youths ran
and managed to secure position 80, 81and 82 respectively, out of about 200
youth that participated in the race.
Tegla Lorupe had time to share with the PSF present there Mr. Moses Porowa
and the regional coordinator Mr Wycliffe Ijackaa about what can be done in
future to organize such event in Sudan, because she felt encouraged with
the presence of the Sudan team who for the first time participated this
event. She there also promised to conduct one in Southern Sudan.'
This peace march/ meetings were a follow up of the one of the recommendations of the peace beyond borders’ Kapoeta peace conference which was held in May 2008 at Kapoeta. This was the first meeting between the Toposa, Murle and the Jie and was a step towards what was agreed in Kapoeta. The main objective of the march was to enhance the peace message between the Toposa and the Murle, the Toposa and the Jie and the Jie and the Murle, and to find ways of reinforcing peace between the three communities.

Targeting women and youths, joint Peace and Sustainable Development Project
implemented jointly by Seeds of Peace (SOPA), Presbyterian Relief and Development
Agency (PRDA), Gambela Peace and Development Council (GPDC), ICCO/ Capacity
Assessment and Development Programme (CADEP) and IKV Pax christi in partnership
with Intervida has had several activities being undertaken in Upper Nile and Gambela region
with the over all goal of ensuring sustainable peace, security and development in conflict affected
communities within the region.
